Southern Cheese Straws

The Real Homestyle rub adds a savory pop to this southern classic snack that comes together in less than 30 minutes.

  • 2 c. cheddar cheese (one 8 oz. block), shredded and brought to room temperature

  • 1 c. unsalted butter, room temperature

  • 2 c. all purpose flour

  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder

  • 1 Tbsp. The Real Homestyle rub

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  2. Cream together butter and cheese in stand mixer until well blended.

  3. Add baking powder and Homestyle and beat on medium speed until blended.

  4. Add flour and beat on medium speed for about 5 minutes or until very creamy. Gradually add a little bit of water at a time and continue to cream until batter reaches the proper consistency for piping (a little bit stiffer than peanut butter).

  5. Using a cookie press or decorating bag with a star tip, pipe cheese straws onto a parchment-lined baking sheet (approx. 3 in. in length), leaving space between straws for some spreading.

  6. Bake 15-17 minutes or until golden.

  7. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely before handling.

Tip: Need to bring butter to room temp quickly? Fill a tall glass with very hot water. Discard the water and place the glass over a stick of butter stood on end for a few minutes to bring the butter up in temp without melting it.
